Judy Manning • Bachelor of Science Northern Kentucky University Degrees: Mathematics and Psychology • Masters of Education Northern Kentucky University Concentration: Mathematics • 26 years of teaching experience at Highlands Middle School
7th Grade Advanced Math • New Common Core Standards • What does that mean for my child? Fewer concepts More in-depth More rigorous Mastery learning Level Playing Field
The Common Core Standards • The Number System • Rational and Irrational • Real • Expressions and Equations • Work with radicals and Integer Exponents • Proportional Relationships/Linear Equations • Analyze and solve linear equations and • Functions • Define, evaluate, and compare functions • Use functions to model the relationships between quantities
Geometry • Understand congruence and similarity • Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem • Volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres • Statistics and Probability • Investigate patterns of association in bivariate data.
Develop the following Mathematical Practices • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Model with mathematics. • Use appropriate tools strategically. • Attend to precision. • Look for and make use of structure. • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Teaching Environment • Active • Hands-On • Discovery • Collaborative • Develops Critical Thinking • Rigorous
Homework • Yes, they really do have it everyday. • There are a few rare exceptions. • When in doubt, check the website. • We practice to solidify our skills, determine what we still need to work on, and to develop mastery. • Late work will be completed in Saturday School.
Web Site(www.fortthomas.kyschools.us) • Syllabus • Announcements about upcoming quizzes, tests, projects • Assignments • Copies of homework (if a handout)
Grading • Point System • Class work (5-25 pts) • Homework (5 – 25 pts) • Quizzes ( about 50 pts) • Tests (100- 150 pts) • Projects (50 – 100 pts) • Open Responses (25-50 pts)
