  2. Danish fishermen ferry a boatload of Jewish fugitives across a narrow sound to neutral Sweden during the nationwide rescue operation. News of impending deportations of Jews spawned a rapid response by the Danes, who worked feverishly to save Jewish citizens. Boats of every size and shape were used to transport the Jews from Denmark to Sweden, away from the grasp of the Nazis.

  4. Pre-war portrait of Ala Gertner. Gertner was one of the participants in the Sonderkommando uprising in Auschwitz. Gertner was assigned to the Union Munitions factory and became a part of the uprising against the Nazis. The plan was to blow up one of the crematoria. The resistance succeeded in destroying Crematorium IV on October 7, 1944: but Ala Gertner, and her four friends involved were arrested and tortured. On January 5, 1945, all four women were publicly hanged.
