  3. Islam • Muslims are strict monotheists. • They believe in the Judeo- Christian God, which they call Allah. • Muslims believe that the Torah and the Bible, like the Qur’an, is the word of God.

  4. Basic Islamic Beliefs • Quran is the Holy Book • The place of Worship for Muslims is in a Mosque • Sharia is the a guideline of laws that Muslims should practice: • No Alcohol or Pork • No Gambling • Three Holy Cities Mecca, Jerusalem and Medina

  5. The Origins of the Quran • Muhammad received his first revelation from the angel Gabriel in the Cave of Hira in 610. • 622 Hijrah  Muhammed flees Mecca for Medina. * The beginning of the Muslim calendar (1 A.H.) • Muhammad’s revelations were compiled into the Qur’an after his death.

  6. The Five Pillars of Islam 1. The Shahaadatayn • Belief – Allah is the one true God and Muhammad is the Prophet 2. The Salaah • Prayer Five times Daily • Dawn • Noon • Late Afternoon • Sunset • Before going to bed • Wash before Prayer • Face Mecca

The Zakaah • Alms – Giving money to the Needy • Should be about 2.5 % of your income • The Siyaam • Fast during the month of Ramadan • No eating or drinking from sunrise to sunset during Ramadan 5. The Hajj • A follower of the Islamic faith must travel to Mecca (The Holy City) and make a pilgrimage once in their lifetime.

The Spread of Islam • Easy to learn and practice. • No priesthood. • Teaches equality. • Non-Muslims, who were “Peoples of the Book,” were allowed religious freedom, but paid additional taxes. • Easily “portable”  nomads & trade routes. • Jihad (“Holy War”) against pagans and other non-believers (“infidels”).

  9. Divisions of Islam • Sunni – believed the caliph (successor to Muhammad? Should be chosen by Muslim leaders • Shi’a – believed the caliph should be descendants of Muhammad only
