  3. Author’s Purpose and Perspective • One of the earliest types of computers was created in 1888 by Herman Hollerith. Hollerith invented a machine to count the results of the United States census of 1890. A census is an official count of how many people live in a place. Hollerith’s machine used a punch-card system to collect information. Census takers punched holes next to certain numbers. Then Hollerith’s machine read the pattern of holes punched in each card. This type of computer seems very old fashion compared to computers of today. Still, the punch-card machine was an important step in the history of the computer.

Locating Information • Some electronic Sources: • Library Database is a collection of records about all the books and other resources in the library. • CD ROM encyclopedia the text of an encyclopedia stored in a CD ROM disc • Online Magazine and newspapers have been especially designed to be read on a computer that has an internet connection

Library Data Base • Search by author’s name, a book title, call number, a subject, or a key word. • Searching by key word means the computer will search all records for this word or phrase. • First think about the information you need to find: • Books by an author do a Author search • If you know the Title do Title search • If you need general information enter a descriptive keyword to search the entire collection.

  9. Practice • Reading Workbook page 45 • This shows a screen from a library database. • Let’s work together to practice how to find information in a library database.

  10. Vocabulary • Turn to page 214 in your reading book. • Read along with me and think about what the author’s perspective could be about the internet.

  11. Summarize Tell your partner about Three Little Cyberpigs. Use the sequence words to think about the story. First Next Then Last

  12. Summarize What we Know… First The Three Little Pigs are trying to get away form the Big Bad Wolf. Next The Three Little Pigs run into a computer store for protection. They meet Ann, a helpful guide in Cyperland. Then The Three Little Pigs learn all about computers. They also meet several nursery rhyme characters.
