  1. Brainstorm about Inspiration • What ideas come to mind when you think about inspiration? • What are some examples of how this concept appears in the world? • What examples can you think of in art, music, movies, literature that shows inspiration in action? • What kinds of things might be considered to be inspirational? • What are some of the characteristics of inspiration, based on the ideas you have written?

  2. Ideas about Inspiration • Look up the word in a dictionary. What does the word literally mean? • What changes may have taken place over time in the definition of inspiration? • How might one person’s inspiration differ from another? • What aspects of inspiration are likely to be the same no matter who, when or where it is envisioned? • How are those aspects that differ different than the aspects that would remain the same?

Inspiration Defined • Something that fills one with the urge or ability to do or feel something, esp. to do something creative • Something that creates a feeling, esp. a positive one in a person • Someone who animates a person with a feeling or urge to do or feel something creative • Something that gives rise to the urge to create or do something extraordinary • The act of breathing in (air); inhalation

  4. Categorize your Ideas • Review the ideas you wrote down. What is similar about the ideas? • How would you put the brainstormed ideas into groups? • What would you call each group? • Do all your inspirations fall into groups? Do some things fall into more than one group? • Is there a different way you might categorize your ideas? What other categories might you use?

Brainstorm things that do not inspire • What are things that do not inspire? • Are there things that seem to discourage inspiration? • What evidence or proof do you have that these things do not inspire? • How might you group things that don’t inspire? What can you call these groups? • How are the groups of things that do not inspire similar to or different from the things that do inspire?

  6. Think about the following ideas and whether they inspire. • Family • Culture or Customs • Life Events • Travel or Experiences • Geography • Explain your answers. If they cause inspiration, where would they fit in your categories of inspiration? If they do not, where would they fit in your categories of things that do not inspire?

  7. Make a generalization about Inspiration • A generalization is something that is always or almost always true. • What generalizations can you make about inspiration? Use your examples and categories to guide your thinking.

  8. Making a Generalization about Inspiration • What are some characteristics about all the things that inspire? • What can you say about the concept of Inspiration that is usually true? • Write several statements that are generalizations about inspiration.
