  4. The Rubble Trench A favorite of Frank Lloyd Wright Dig trench 4 inches deeper than the frost line.

  5. Lining trench with landscaping fabric before backfilling minimizes silt washing into gravel.

  6. Tamp in 4 inches of washed gravel and set in perforated drain tile that slopes to one corner. Must gravity feed away from building.

  7. Creative alternative to plastic drain tile.

  8. Fill trench with clean gravel, tamping regularly for solid compaction.

  9. The stem wall or grad beam can be poured with reinforced concrete. This gets the build above grade and away from moisture.
