What Catholics say about salvation • Good works in sanctifying grace are necessary for salvation • “By the grace of Christ, we achieve the salvation God desires for us through perseverance in both faith and works. Many Protestants, on the other hand, believe that one just has to accept Jesus as personal Lord and Savior to be saved, and good works are not necessary (they just flow from those already saved.) [The Bible] teaches us that our performance of good works is necessary for salvation” (Scripture Catholic)

What Catholics say about salvation • Jesus taught that we must endure to the very end to be saved – Matt. 10:22, 24:13; Mark 13:13 • Jesus’ teaching on the separation of the sheep from the goats is based on the works that were done during their lives – Matt. 25:31-46 • Jesus says we are repaid for the works we have done at the resurrection of the just. Our works lead to salvation – Luke 14:14 • At the judgment seat of Christ, we are judged according to what we have done in the body, not how much faith we had – 2 Cor. 5:10

What Catholics Believe about salvation • Justification • “Justification is an inner change of the person which is infusion and a declaration by God which is imputation.” • Sanctification is obtained through sacraments • “A sacrament properly speaking is that which is ordained to signify our sanctification. In which three things may be considered: The very cause of our sanctification; which is Christ’s passion: the form of our sanctification; which is grace and the virtues: and the ultimate end of our Sanctification, which is eternal life. And all of these are signified by the sacraments. Consequently, a sacrament is a sign that is both a reminder of the past and an indication of that which is effected in us by Christ’s passion, that is a foretelling of future glory” (Summa Theologica)

What the bible says about salvation • Justification • To declare righteous; “Just as if I never sinned” • Forgiveness is when Justification happens and righteousness is imputed. • In Christ we have his righteousness – James 2:22-24 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend. 24 You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. • Justification describes our spiritual position – it is unchanging

We can become more sanctified

Consequently, it should have external ceremonies and symbols of things sacred • Taking the word “sacrament” in the broadest sense, as the sign of something sacred and hidden. The invisible found in the visible • The principle reason for sacraments system is found in man. It is the nature of man to be lead by things sense-perceptible to things spiritual and intelligible. Now Divine providence provides for everything in accordance with it’s nature: Divine wisdom provides means of salvation for men in the form of certain sensible signs which are called sacraments
