  2. Rule 1 • Comma rule 1: Use commas after dependent clauses.

  4. Rule 2 • Comma rule 2: Use commas between items in a list. PRACTICE: Insert commas in the appropriate place in the sentences below. 1. India Pakistan China and Singapore are Asian countries. 2. There are roses orchids sunflowers and lilies in the basket. Write a sentence with a list of your own in your notes.

  5. Rule 3 • Comma rule 3: Use a comma to connect two independent clauses joined by either for,and, nor, but, or, yet, or so. You can remember these words because commas are awesome and they have F.A.N.B.O.Y.S. • Steps to practice comma rule #3 successfully: • Underline the simple subject for each clause • Circle the simple predicate for each clause • If there are two independent clauses, put the commas before the F.A.N.B.O.Y.S. word.

  6. Practice 3 (follow the steps) • I am happy with the progress that we have made as a class yet I want to see even more. • The teachers know that the students want to learn so they work hard. • The teachers stay after school and sometimes work in their room on the weekends.

  7. Rule 4 • Comma rule 4: We will be able to correctlyuse commas to mark off appositivephrases. Practice: • The brains of the students which are growing bigger all the time are precious. • Our principal at De Anza Ms. Benjamin is a hard worker. • Write two sentences in your notes using a appositional phrase.

  8. Rule 5 • Comma rule 5: Use commas to separate adjectives, or describing words, that are right next to each other. Practice: • The guy on the street is a weird loud man. • They live in an old strange house. Write your own sentence using multiple adjectives.

  9. Comma rule 6: Use commas after introductory phrases. Practice: • After class students sometimes stick around to get tutoring. • Once outside students enjoy the beautiful sunshine. Write a sentence of your own using an introductory phrase.

  10. Other Stuff • Use a comma to separate items in dates. Use a comma to separate the last item in a date fromthe words that come after it. Do not use commas to set off the month from the day or themonth from the year when no day is given. • EXAMPLES: • Last Thursday, April 30, 2003, I took my first tuba lesson. • We moved in November 1996.

  11. Use a comma to separate items in addresses. Use a comma to separate the last item in an address from the words that come after it. Do not use commas to set off a house number from a street name, a state abbreviation from a ZIP Code, or address items joined by prepositions. • EXAMPLES: • Please send the package to me at 1510 Woodrow Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44199.
