Meet Your Teacher:Mrs. Liz Kirby PARENT of two daughters, one an RMHS junior, the other a graduate of RMHS (‘06) & the University of Illinois (‘10) B.S., English/Art Illinois State University M.S., Curriculum/Instruction Northeastern Illinois University Experienced language arts teacher: •2 years middle school •11 years Young Adult Program alternative high school •11 years RMHS

  3. Goals For This Year? • Improve Communication Skills: Written and Oral • Learn English Grammar/Structure • Read! • Increase Vocabulary • Develop study skills • Organization and School Readiness • College Readiness

  4. District Goals? • Increase student success rate in courses (A, B, C) • Increase sub-group EPAS scores • Increase number of students taking AP classes and exams and passing AP tests

  5. Whereare we now? • Stamp Sheets & Binders: monitoring daily habits of work and organizational skills • Cooperative Education: community spirit and skills for group-learning • WTL’s and grammar: introspective writing to learn • Communication process: the system of oral and nonverbal com • Vocabulary: “stems” and STEMWORDS to increase reading, writing and speaking fluency

Whereare we headed? • Speeches and Media Presentations • Writing Process and Organization (MEL-Con) • Selected Fiction and Non-Fiction Works • Classic Novels: Of Mice & Men; To Kill a Mockingbird • Word Within a Word (250 stems by June! WOW!) • WREN Booklets (Writing and English)— Use for instruction, District Wide • Independent Reading (30 min. per day,”spiral reading effect,” starting October)

  7. On-line Curriculum & Grading • Classroom activities, homework, and resources are available on our “weebly” : rmhskirby.weebly.com • Grading is updated online: homelogic.com • Notes & class updates will be sent through homelogic to your registered email.

  8. How can you help your child gain SUCCESS? • Check your child’s assignment notebook and WOC1 homepage/calendar atrmhskirby.weebly.com • Organization: Binder and Homework folder (green) • Reading at home (newspapers, magazines, books) • Checkhomelogic.comfrequently • Quiz your son/daughter over word stems (flash cards/ www.quizlet.com) • Practice speeches
