  1. Brief history of Social Media Advertising The advertising industry has changed drastically over the past century. From print ads to traditional media to social media, we have come a long way in understanding and influencing our audience. With technological advancements and cultural evolution of the world we live in the style of advertising has changed according to our audiences and their preferences. Here’s a brief look at the history of some of the ads that changed the way we advertise – 1906: The world’s first full page advert features Kellogg’s, as a result of which Corn Flakes sales increase from 500 cases per day to 2,900. 1912: Times Square, New York builds the world’s largest billboard measuring 32m x 15m. Ad agencies claim that billboards are the ultimate way to grab eyeballs. 1922: Radio stations start selling time slots in exchange for mentions. 1939: David Ogilvy uses postcards to advertise for his first client, a hotel. He mails them to everyone in his phone directory. 1941: Watchmaker Bulova paid $9 for a 10 second spot during a primetime baseball game on New York station WNBT. 1971: Coca-Cola releases a musical TVC. Their sales shoot up enormously. 1994: US Telecom company AT&T runs the world’s first digital ad –“Have you ever clicked your mouse right here? You will”. 2000: Google launches AdWords.

  2. 2002: The first mobile SMS short code campaign is run by Labatt Brewing Company in North America. 2008: Facebook launches engagement ads. It’s 2016 and Social Media Advertising has taken over the budgets of a majority of brands. Though billboards, print ads and television spots still continue to exist, a huge fraction of revenue generation comes directly from AdWords and Facebook Ads. Unlike traditional media, Social Media hosts a variety of adverts that can range from minimalist creatives, videos, memes and a mass of other exciting content formats. Engaging content, good timing and a well targeted audience is the key to successful Social Media Advertising. Choose the right platform and share the right post at the right time and bingo, you’ve mastered the art of Digital Marketing. It is an exciting time to be in as brands and agencies churn out new strategies every day to market themselves in the digital space.
