Chelsea Middle School Mission • Excellence in education • Developmentally appropriate programs • Positive school climate • Challenge students to grow • Meet needs of different learning styles so….Students who struggle may be periodically (2-3/days/week) given intervention support by one of their teachers

  4. MS: Myth and Reality • Homework • No myth—it’s reality • HW is posted weekly on school web site: • http://www.shelbyed.k12.al.us/schools/chms/homework_chms.htm • Dress Code • Yes — another reality • Lockers are assigned alphabetically • MUST dress for PE

  5. More Myth or Reality ? • CNP IS account monies transfer to MS • Grades can be checked online using STI Home, cost is $20 • Reality: every 3 weeks, more depending on the teacher • Students are required to keep agenda planner (school will sell one in July) $6 • E-News published 2 X/week

  6. Overview of Grade 6 Curriculum • PE • Electives: two choices: Chorus/Aerobic Fitness or Band • Wheel: Math Focus, FACS, Basic Computer Skills, Art taken in a 9 weeks rotation • Core • Mathematics 6 • Social Studies • Science • Language Arts (block)

  7. Course selection for 6th grade classes Sharon Butz, Guidance Director • 5th grade teachers given course selection forms on April 14th. Due to your child’s teacher on April 19th. • Pre-AP? GRC? Understanding placement. Please speak to your child’s current teacher for recommendations. • Academic Support Courses in Reading and Math are available. • Understanding the WHEEL (Are four nine-week classes which include Art, Research and study skills, computers, and Family and Consumer Science.)

  8. ATTENDANCE—VERY IMPORTANT • When you are absent, YOU MUST call before 8 am at 682-7212 to report. • 3 unexcused absences requires a school conference with administration • 5 unexcused absences requires an Early Warning referral to juvenile court • Vacations and discretionary family trips will be unexcused • After 12 absences, parents/child will sign an attendance contract and only doctors and court excuses will be accepted.

What’s Next? • Course selection forms due to your 5th grade teacher on April 19th • Summer Registration and tours, locker day July 20, 7-11AM • Make up days: July 27, 4-7 and July 28, 7-11 • Fees, Yearbook, money in accounts • Reading list and supply list will be sent home by the end of the year. • Save the Date: Aug. 5th Ice Cream Social/Orientation for upcoming 6th grade.
