  5. Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades Explanation: This busy emblem - which is also used by the mainstream Fatah political party - emphasizes the militancy of the Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades. The rifles, fists, grenade and phrases like "revolution until victory" reinforce the theme. The colors - black, green, red and white - represent Palestinian nationalism, as do the Palestinian flags.

  6. Al Qaeda Organization for Holy War Explanation: A black background (in flags and symbols) often represents the goal of restoring the Islamic caliphate - a united Muslim empire. It also evokes death and militancy. The globe evokes the organization's worldwide ambitions, while the Koran signifies a foundation in Islam. The rifle, fist and flag, symbols of militancy, rise from that base. The lettering spells the group's name ("Monotheism and Jihad" in English).

  7.  Hamas Explanation: The Islamic imagery in this emblem is encoded in the use of green, which is the color of Islam, as well as in the flag and the Koran clutched in the hand of the figure. The Koranic verse at the bottom refers to the role of believers in fighting holy war. The Al Aksa Mosque evokes both Islam as well as Palestinian nationalism. The M-16 rifle signifies the group's militancy and readiness to use violence.

  8.  Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam Explanation: The symbol prominently displays three colors: red, yellow and black. The background is red, which denotes revolution and social change. The yellow tiger is an emblem with deep roots in Tamil culture, representing heroism, militancy and patriotism. It also signifies the group's goal of self-determination. The black rifle and bullets underscore a commitment to violence.

  9. Muslim Brotherhood Explanation: The swords reinforce the group's militancy and, as traditional weapons, symbolize historic Islam. They also reinforce the group's commitment to jihad. The Koran denotes the group's spiritual foundation. The motto, "Be prepared," is a reference to a Koranic verse that talks of preparing to fight the enemies of God.
