  2. Relevant? Chips in altitude Have you ever seen an expanded bag of potato chips up in the mountains? If you have, did you ever wondered how fast this expansion process happens? We set out to answer that question…

  3. Design Our design: 1. One way valve 2. Tank 1 (Expansion occurs) 3. Gondola 4. Tank 2 (measurements) 5. Water 6. 25 ml markings Not to scale

  4. Results • We took three tests each at 500 and 1000 ft. • Our predictions: We predicted that at 1000ft 600ml of air would expand 22mL and at 500ft 11ml • These are our results: At 500ft the air expanded an average of 4.67ml, and at 1000 it expanded an average of 6.83ml

  5. Analysis Reasons for discrepancies • As time progressed temperatures rose • Evaporation • Shaking gondola • Changing of previously expanded air • Leaks in gondola • Slow mastery of procedure
