  1. Levels of organization and Body Systems

  2. What do you already know about cells? How are organisms organized?

  3. 1 2 6 ? 5 3 4 Can you think of the important word that is hidden below?Raise your hand when you are ready to give an answer. About 1.75 million ____ have been discovered on Earth. Some ____ are multi-celled and some are uni-celled. Also known as living things Organism Beetles are some of the most successful ________ on Earth. All __________ have the 6 characteristics of life. All __________ have the 4 needs of life.

  4. Organisms are organized! There are five levels of organization in advanced organisms. From the outside in, they are: • 5. Organism • 4. Organ Systems • 3. Organs • 2. Tissues • 1. Cells biggest smallest

  5. Level 5: ORGANISM Definition: Any living thing. (It has all the characteristics of life.)

  6. Level 5: ORGANISM Organisms sometimes exist as unicellular (single cell), but most are multicellular (many cells) such as plants and animals.

  7. Organ + Organ = Organ System Definition: a group of organs that work together and perform a specific task. You have 11 organ systems in your body. Ex: digestive system, skeletal system, etc. Level 4: Organ System

  8. Are there any organ systems we could live without? Level 4: Organ System

  9. Level 3: Organs • Tissue + Tissue = Organ • Definition: A group of tissues working together • Examples Animal organs: Heart, stomach, brain, lungs, intestines Plant organs: Roots, stems, leaves

  10. Level 3: Organs

  11. Level 3: Organs Are there any organs we could live without?

  12. Level 3: Organs

  13. Cells + Cells = Tissue Definition: A group of cells that work together to meet a common purpose Level 2: Tissues No, not that kind of tissue! 

  14. Level 2: Tissues No, not that kind of tissue! 

  15. There are 3 kinds of plant tissue: Dermal (protection) Ground (storage and energy) Vascular (transportation) Level 2: Tissues

  16. There are four kinds of animal tissue: Nerve Muscle Connective Epithelial (protection) Level 2: Tissues

  17. Connective tissue makes up organs like the bones, blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, etc… Organ made of tissues

  18. Nerve Tissue Makes up organs like the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Organ made of tissues

  19. Epithelial Tissue makes up organs like the skin, hair, and fingernails Organs made of tissues

  20. Muscle tissue makes up organs like the heart, stomach, kidneys, lungs, biceps, etc… Organ made of tissues

  21. Definition: The basic unit of all living things Level 1: Cells

  22. Remember, an organism can be just ONE cell (unicellular), or else it is made of MANY cells (multicellular) Level 1: Cells

  23. Level 1: Cells

  24. Levels of Organization Organ Systems Cells Tissues Organs Organism

  25. 1 2 6 ? 5 3 4 Can you think of the important word that is hidden below?Raise your hand when you are ready to give an answer. Includes eukaryotic and prokaryotic types 1 Somatic ______ divide by mitosis The ___ is the basic unit of life. Cell (s) All living things are made of at least 1. Gametes ______ divide by meiosis A human has approx. 60 -100 trillion ___.

  26. Match the following to levels of organization…

  27. The earthworm’s gizzard

  28. Fire Lord Ozai

  29. A human heart

  30. A slice of a human heart

  31. A human heart plus all the blood vessels in the body

  32. A maple leaf

  33. Epithelial, muscle, nerve, connective

  34. ALL of the roots of a tree

  35. Dermal _____, ground ______, and vascular _______

  36. Muscle cells come together to form muscle _________

  37. A plant’s vascular tissue is made up of plant _______.

  38. Respiratory, circulatory, muscle, digestive, reproductive, skeletal, nervous These are all examples of __________.

  39. These float around in your blood, bringing you oxygen.

  40. Which of the following is an example of an organ? A large intestine B inner lining of the stomach C digestive system D muscle fiber

  41. Which of the following is an example of an organism? A a mouse B a skull bone C a nerve cell D skin

  42. Saliva contains an enzyme which begins to break down starch as soon as you put it into your mouth. If a person did not produce saliva, which would be most affected? Most directly affected would be their _____________. A digestive system B blood cells C nervous system D liver
