  1. Welcome toMrs. Sevier’s Class4th Grade Open House

  2. About Mrs. Purcell • This is my fifth year of teaching here at Eagle Hills! • My husband Shane and I have been married for 16 years. We have two sons Jacob 12, and Isaac 5 months. • I graduated from the University of Central Missouri in 2002 with a B.S. in Elementary Education. My experience includes working as a para-professional, Early Childhood teacher, and in the military. • In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, reading, roller skating, and running.

  3. Classroom Expectations • This is a Love & Logic classroom. In this classroom, students feel free to do anything that does not cause a problem for themselves or others’. Do not mistake Love & Logic as a permissive approach. • Your child is encouraged to make many choices in this classroom. He/she will experience natural consequences of his/her actions. I am available daily from 2:45-2:55 to assist students with problems.

  4. 4th Grade Curriculum • English Language Arts (ELA) • Journey’s curriculum that include a Main Story each week • Word Study- understanding word patterns vs. memorizing. • Continue to develop writing with a focus on being able to revise • (Narrative, Informational, and Opinion) • Foster independent reading • Develop vocabulary (prefixes, suffixes, Greek and Latin stems) • Targeted Reading Groups with mixed grade 4/5

  5. 4th Grade Curriculum Continued… • Math • New York Engage curriculum • Basic Multiplication Facts should already be mastered • Place Value to millions, reading and writing numbers • Multiplication and Division Computation- Using many different strategies to help solve problems, real world applications • Fractions- adding and subtracting, comparing, multiplying, and dividing • Data Collection- graphing and plotting • Geometry- Perimeter and area, measures and angles, symmetry, geometric attributes

  6. 4th Grade Curriculum Continued… • Idaho History • Native Americans- tribes and culture • Geography- learn regions of Idaho, interpret and analyze maps • Westward Expansion- Lewis and Clark, Fur trappers and traders, Oregon Trail • Economics and Government- Consumers and Producers, Citizenship • Mystery Science • New Science Standards and curriculum • Friday afternoons • Circuits, waves, ecosystems, experiments • More detailed information can be found at www.westada.org click “parents” and “curriculum”

  8. School Supplies • *Ear buds/Headphones • *Limited storage space • *Pencils, pens, scissors, glue stick

  9. Homework It is essential that YOU adapt homework to meet the needs of your family! Your child should always have a book to read. They should be reading at least 20 minutes each night. Homework Slips will go home on Fridays and may be returned any day of the week. Homework Helper will check off returned homework slip, tickets given Friday Folders- Return to school each week for tickets Book It! Pizza coupons will be based on weekly Reading Log homework.

  10. Ways to Help your 4th Grader • Play board games that put their skills to use. Scrabble, Yatzhee, Clue, Monopoly, etc. • Take your child to the library and get him/her their own library card. • Enjoy all kinds of literature together. Read to them and have them read to you. • Math-Focus on the number correct, celebrate the small stuff • Support their emotional needs as they struggle.
