  27. CORO PARTNERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS (Fall Component) • Strengthened Coro’s partnership with San Leandro High School • Recruited and engaged 20 new 10th, 11th, and 12th graders to participate in 6 weekly after-school workshops for the Fall Youth REP program. • Designed and Facilitated 6 weekly leadership workshops at San Leandro High School focused on research and evaluation skills to provide youth voice in identifying school specific successes/areas for improvement in the areas of Resources, Relationships and Recognition. • Facilitated the design of a student-led, school-wide survey during REP meetings to initiate understanding of student ownership of their school experience and their knowledge and involvement in after-school programs. • Students conducted brief surveying interviews with 150+ peers, teachers, and administrators to discover student awareness of after-school programs and how students and school staff can work together to address the issue of student involvement.  • Students and myself are delivering student-led, school-wide survey in coordination with this year’s WASC survey (has been delayed)

ADDITIONAL FALL HIGHLIGHTS • With new student connections, co-created and ran SLHS’ Pirate Lounge – a healthy student meeting space – twice a week from 11/16-4/4 • Provided 300+ students weekly with a healthy after-school alternative in the provision of the Pirate Lounge each week CORO WINTER & SPRING HIGHLIGHTS • Strengthened a partnership with San Leandro High School’s Freshman Korematsu campus • Delivered classroom presentations to 22 9th and 10th grade classes • Involved 180 students interested in Spring’s Youth In Action program • Received 50 applications for Spring’s Youth In Action program • 35 students attended Youth In Action Selection Day; 35 students accepted into the program • Simultaneous management of two YIA programs to accommodate for additional interest of students • Maintained relationships with last year’s YIA graduates • Developing the facilitation skills of 4 Coro Alumni (2 Youth Fellows, 2 Youth Leaders) (11th graders) who have stepped into a peer leadership role and helped to mentor the 9th and 10th graders and facilitate workshops

ADDITIONAL WINTER & SPRING HIGHLIGHTS • Facilitated two relationship building interviews between assistant principals and Coro students focused on the achievement gap and ways to address it at SLHS • Delivered 16 of the 24 weekly 2.5 hour workshops thus far • Have a 90% (average) attendance rate • Planning a culminating youth led event at the June 6th staff meeting focused on the achievement gap and building stronger relationships between teachers and students at SLHS (will be over 150 attendees) • Gave 8 classroom presentations to 10th graders about Coro’s intensive 8-week summer program. • Accepted 6 San Leandro High rising 11th graders to participate in Coro’s Exploring Leadership Summer Internship Program (participants earn an $800 stipend)

Girls Incorporated of Alameda County • HEART Peer Education Program • At-a-Glance • HEART (Helping Everyone Achieve Respect Together) is a health and sexuality peer education program for teen girls ages 14-18. Girls become health and sexuality experts through learning about reproductive health, teen pregnancy prevention, STIs and HIV, intimacy and healthy relationships, peer pressure, depression, and other important topics. The girls also develop strong peer educator skills, such as active listening and effective communication, needed in their monthly activities focused on reaching out to at least five young women in their communities to discuss important health and sexuality topics and answer questions. Second-year HEART peer educators become mentors and take on additional responsibilities such as facilitating monthly trainings, mentoring peers, and providing expanded community outreach and engagement. • 2010/11 ACCOMPLISHMENTS • One hundred percent of peer educators increased their knowledge of reproductive health after the week-long peer educator training in August 2010. Other highlights include: • Reached over 1,000 Alameda County youth through one-on-one peer contacts • Lobbied in Sacramento for reproductive rights on Reproductive Freedom Day • Completed the New York Woodhull Institute’s Ethical Leadership Program • REQUIREMENTS FOR 1ST YEAR PEER EDUCATORS • Attend a 30-hour health and sexuality training • Attend weekly meetings September through May • Complete 5-6 contacts per month, due at the last meeting of every month • Attend special events and field trips, including an overnight HEART Retreat • BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN HEART AND GIRL INC. PROGRAMS • $40 monthly stipend for first year peer educators, $50 for second year mentors • Sisterhood among peer educators • Part of a larger effort to reduce teen pregnancy • Opportunity to apply for Girls Inc. scholarships after first year of participation • Mentor/Intern led trainings, guest speakers, team building, leadership development, community experiences and • field trips
