The Bolshevik Takeover • November 1917 armed factory workers teamed up with Sailors and attacked the provisional government. • Members of the government were meeting in Petrograd. A cadet entered the room and said the Bolsheviks were storming the palace. • “Its no use.” a politician said, “We give up. No Bloodshed.”
Bolsheviks In Charge • Bolsheviks rapidly gained power in many cities. • In Moscow they fought for a week before gaining control. • They made Moscow their Capital. • They ended private ownership of land and gave land to peasants. • Russians thought they had control of their own lives but really the Bolsheviks would become their new masters.
Allied Invasions • Lenin wanted peace with Germany. • Russia signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk March 1918. The Russians had to give up a large chunk of land and a third of their population. • Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania went against the Red Army and broke free. Ukraine, Caucasus, and Central Asia weren’t so lucky. • The Allies sent Forces to help the Whites. They wanted to continue the war against Germany. • Allied forces failed and led to communists distrust of the West
A Costly Triumph • Both Counterrevolutionary Forces and Communists took cruel procedures to be the victor in the Civil War. • Counterrevolutionaries killed captured communists. • Communists organized their own police (Cheka). They executed anyone who was believed to be apart of Counterrevolutionary activities. • The Czar and Czarina and their children where killed to keep them from becoming a symbol for Counterrevolutionary forces. • By 1921 the Communists defeated their enemies.
Lenin Builds a Communist State • Lenin’s beginning years as leader of Russia had been occupied by the Civil War. • Afterwards he turned his attention to building a classless society. • Communist created a constitution that was both democratic and socialist. (1922) • Set up an elected legislature (Supreme Soviet) and gave all citizens over the age of 18 the right to vote. • The Communist party, however, reigned supreme not the people.
The NEP • Lenin took up the New Economic Policy in 1921. • It allowed the state to control the Banks, foreign trade, and large industries. • Small businesses were allowed to open for private profit and the government stopped taking grain from peasants.
