  2. Frequently Asked Questions. . . What are the causes of hair loss? • Alopecia Our largest number of children live with alopecia. Alopecia is an auto-immune disorder that causes the hair follicles to shut down. This disease has varying degrees and affects 4.7 million people in the United States alone. • Cancer Cancer constitutes the second highest percentage of our recipients. Every year approximately 2,200 children under age 20 are diagnosed with brain tumors. Radiation treatment to the brain stem as a treatment for cancer can cause permanent hair loss. Chemotherapy may also cause hair loss to be long-term depending on the length of treatment needed.

  3. Frequently Asked Questions. . . How is hair donated? • The hair is gathered in a ponytail or braid • The hair must be at least 10 inches from the beginning of the ponytail to the tip • Hair is then cut and prepared for shipping • After the hair is cut, a professional hair stylist will be available to cut and style the donor’s hair according to the donor’s wishes

  4. Frequently Asked Questions. . . Are there any rules for donating hair? • Hair can be colored or permed as long as it is healthy • Hair cannot be highlighted or “bleached” • Colored hair will not be used if it is colored over bleached hair • The hair must be a minimum of 10 inches long when pulled back in a ponytail • Curly hair may first be pulled straight to measure 10 inches

  5. What is CJHS doing to help? • In the spring of this school year CJHS will have a day where students can donate their hair to Locks of Love. • Committed students will need to make a obligation to grow their hair out during the school year so the hair will be long enough to cut and donate. • If you are interested in making this commitment, please download the Locks of Love form from the documents section or contact Mrs. Nixon for further information.
