  1. UNITED NATIONS/BELARUS INTERNATIONAL WORSKHOP ON SPACE TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS FOR SOCIO-ECONOMIC BENEFIT MEASURING URBAN SPRAWL ON GEOSPATIAL INDICES USING REMOTE SENSING AND GIS TECHNIQUES NorzailawatiMohd Noor, Alias Abdullah and MazlanHashim, International Islamic University Malaysia MALAYSIA

  2. INTRODUCTION • The remote sensing satellite and GIS techniques was widely used in urban applications – particularly high resolution <5 meters. • This technology are used in managing urban issues including urban sprawl. • In urban context – urban sprawl is a threat for a development and it should be avoided. • It catalyst to urban pollution, congestion, environmental degradation, socio economic problems .

  3. Urban Sprawl Measurement • The measurement issues on sprawl was started when a researcher beginning to redefine sprawl in the context of spatial pattern. • Important – create a good living condition for urban population and sustaining urban resources – with efficient planning on their land use. • Land use segregation refers to land use tract that consist of single –use zoning in which large areas of land are strictly confined to only type of land use such as residential or commercial (Hasse and Lathrop, 2003) • This development is consider as one of significant factor in spatial pattern.

  4. a. Less Sprawling b. More sprawling Urban Sprawl Measurement THE CONCEPT

  5. OBJECTIVES This research aimed to measure the degree of urban sprawl on geospatial indicator using segregation land use development with remote sensing and GIS techniques.

  6. THE STUDY AREA • The study area is located in Kuantan district (03°52N, 103°17E and 03°45N, 103°23E), East part of Malaysia, which covers an administrative area spread over an area about 296,000 hectares. • Majority of the land use patterns consist of built up areas and un-built areas

  7. THE STUDY AREA KUANTAN MALAYSIA

  8. MATERIALS AND SOFTWARE • The primary research will mainly depend on the supply of data from MACRES, Department of survey and mapping Malaysia (JUPEM), and Local Authority (Kuantan Municipal Council) • The software that will be used to calculate and analyze raw data and generate finding includes ERDAS, Ecognition, ArcGIS, MAPinfo and SPSS.

  9. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Satellite data Ground Truth Secondary Data Preprocessing Field Data Radiometric Correction Geometric Correction Vector Data Image classification Sprawl Analysis Spatial Gridding (500 m × 500 m) <3 Land Use (500 m) Sprawl >3 Land Use (500 m) Not Sprawl Result

  10. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY • The index is calculated by counting the number of different land use types within 500 meters of each housing units a delineated in a land use map. • The housing units value are then averaged across the development tract. Since one category of land use in the dataset is labelled with mixed development there are three land use types considered. • Tract of new urban growth with little or no alternate land use within the pedestrian is considered sprawling.

  11. BESERAH LEGEND ANALYSIS AND FINDINGS Kuantan Sentral Semambu IIUM Bkt Pelindung Bandar Indera Mahkota Bandar Kuantan JAYA GADING/ GAMBANG Built Up Area Un-built area

  12. RESULT AND DISCUSSION The development pattern in Kuantan city was considered as non-sprawl. However, in some area the pattern of sprawl has started to develop and need to be handle so it will no be an issue in the future.

  13. CONCLUSION • The study of urban sprawl is important – sustaining a human living in urban area. and • We realize the application of RS technology in city management is crucially needed, since the development of cities is moving rapidly especially in most developing countries.
