  1. Off to the EndocrineSystem We Go! Kalyn Deno EDCI 270 0601 Teachers Students

  2. Students • 3rd – 5th graders • Gifted and talented (higher IQ and developmental level than “average” students) • Any socioeconomic level • High motivation to learn through both auditory and visual learning styles • Large amount of existing knowledge

  3. Objectives • Upon completion of this project, “Off to the Endocrine System We Go,” students will be able to identify the body parts of the endocrine system by choosing the correct picture that corresponds with the given body part. • Students will also be able to correctly answer 75% of a set number of questions about the endocrine system using only the PowerPoint. Standards addressed: 3.2.4, 3.6.1, 5.4.9

  4. Learning Environment • Individually • At a computer station • In a place where the students will be able to talk quietly to themselves without bothering anyone else

  5. Off to the EndocrineSystem We Go!

  6. What do the buttons mean? • Click to go to the next slide • Click to go back one slide • Click to go to the beginning (menu of choices) • Exit X

  7. Menu • This is my first visit. I’m back for another visit.Start at: Take the tour Hypothalamus Pituitary Gland Pineal Gland Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands Adrenal Glands Pancreas Ovaries Testes Matching Game Take the quiz

  8. Today, we’re going to learn about the endocrine system. You were already given some basic information about this body system, but you’ll learn some more detailed information today. Pay close attention, as there will be a matching game later on and a quiz at the end! Now, let’s get ready to learn!

  9. The Endocrine System http://www.medicalook.com/systems_images/Endocrine_System.jpg

  10. Hypothalamus • Controls the pituitary gland and work with it to secrete many different hormones • Links the nervous system to the endocrine system • Consists of neurons with a rich blood supply • Regulates homeostasis http://www.sndonline.net/images/Hypothalamus.jpg X

  11. Pituitary Gland • Controlled by the hypothalamus • Called the “master gland” • Works with the hypothalamus to secrete many different hormones • Considered the most important part of the endocrine system http://www.racingsmarter.com/health/images/ skin_brushing/EndocrinePituitary.jpg X

  12. Pineal Gland • Located in the middle of the brain • Stimulated by nerves from the eyes • Secretes melatonin, which helps to regulate the wake-sleep cycle • Melatonin also depressed the activity of the gonads (ovaries and testes) http://www4.alief.isd.tenet.edu/cahowe/Anatomy/powerpoints/THE%20ENDOCRINE%20SYSTEM_files/slide0008_image017.jpg X

  13. Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands • The thyroid gland is located in the front part of the lower neck • It produces thyroxine and triiodothyronine, which help control the rate at which cells burn fuels from food to produce energy • It also regulates body temperature • The parathyroid glands—four tiny glands attached to the thyroid gland—function together X http://www.elib.gov.ph/edatabase/elibgetdb.php/http/services.epnet.com/GetImage.aspx/getImage.aspx?ImageIID=6215

  14. So far, you’ve learned about the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, the pineal gland, and the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Now, let’s learn about the adrenal glands, the pancreas, the ovaries, and the testes. Keep up the good work! You’re doing a great job!

  15. Adrenal Glands • There are two adrenal glands—one on top of each kidney • Each adrenal gland has two parts—the outer part (adrenal cortex) and the inner part (adrenal medulla) • The cortex produces hormones called corticosteroids • The medulla produces hormones called catecholamines X http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/768/75428.JPG

  16. Pancreas • Serves as both a ducted and a ductless gland • Secretes digestive enzymes into the small intestine • Its islets of Langerhans secrete insulin and glucagon, which help to regulate the blood sugar level X http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/961/50312108.JPG

  17. Ovaries • Female gonads • Located in the pelvis • Produce eggs • Secrete estrogenand progesterone http://www.racingsmarter.com/health/images/skin_brushing/EndocrineOvaries.jpg X

  18. Testes • Male gonads • Located in the scrotum • Secrete testosterone http://www.racingsmarter.com/health/images/skin_brushing/EndocrineTestes.jpg X

  19. Matching Game Directions Match each picture with its corresponding name. If you’re correct, a new slide will show up on the screen. If you’re incorrect, the same slide will show up on the screen so you can try again. GOOD LUCK! X
