About the Program • A non-threatening atmosphere where students will work on reading and writing strategies • Students are currently being assessed to pinpoint specific areas of weaknesses. Students will receive an individualized program based on their needs
Assessments Being Used to Determine Individualized Program • CARS (Comprehensive Assessment of Reading Strategies) • Writing Prompts • Reading Fluency • Running Record Assessments • Data collected from last year
Writing Plan of Action Based on Needs • Scaffold instruction provided in persuasive, explanatory, narrative, open-ended and research writing with individualized teacher conferencing • Improving writing stamina • Spelling and grammar • Understanding and applying the components of revising and editing to writing pieces
Reading Plan of Action Based on Needs • Analyze the following comprehension skills and strategies in novels: conflict, resolution, character traits, theme, setting • Improving reading stamina and fluency • Comprehension and analysis of text features in both fiction and non-fiction writing • Reader’s Response Journals
No more homework! • This class does not put on the additional stress of having homework for another class • Students may bring their class papers and novels to class for help • We are in constant contact with your child’s team reading and writing teachers and are aware of ongoing projects • Independent work rubric completed every two weeks
