  2. By the end of this lesson, you will… • Understand the importance of lab safety • Be able to explain the expectations for working in a lab setting • Understand and interpret various safety symbols found in a laboratory setting.

  3. What’s the big deal? • The main cause of accidents: carelessness • Other causes include: • Lack of knowledge • Not following directions • Equipment malfunction • By learning proper procedures, we can prevent accidents from occuring.

  4. Lab Rules

  5. Wear proper clothing • Goggles, aprons, gloves • No loose clothing or dangling jewelry • Pull back long hair • No open-toed shoes

  6. Before starting the lab • Examine your equipment: • Glassware not chipped, cracked or broken • Wires not exposed or frayed • Read the directions • Ask questions if you do not understand what to do

  7. Proper conduct is a must • Walk carefully • No horseplay • Stay at your station unless getting materials or cleaning up • No food, drinks, make-up at lab stations • Do not taste chemicals • Keep your lab areas neat

  8. In case of an accident… • Know where the following are located: • Eyewash station • Fire extinguisher • Fire blanket • Emergency shower • I need to know about it immediately, no matter how minor • If you start to feel sick or dizzy, I need to know this as well

  12. 0= Will not burn 1= Ignites at temperatures above 200°F 2= Ignites at temps below 200°F 3= Ignites at temperatures below 100°F 4= Ignites at temperatures below 73°F 0= Stable 1= Unstable when heated 2= Violent chemical change 3= Shock and heat may detonate 4= May detonate OX= Oxidizer ACID= Acid ALK= Alkaline COR= Corrosive W= Use no water = Radioactive 0= Normal 1= Slightly hazardous 2= Hazardous 3= Extremely hazardous 4= Deadly
