An Overview of Expectations and Assignments for 3rd Quarter ELA We have covered many goals and objectives in ELA class this quarter. We will continue to analyze figurative language in prose, poetry, songs, media, and advertisement. We will also work on reading nonfiction novels and informational text independently. Finally, we will also review all concepts learned from quarters 1-2 and take a 2nd quarter review benchmark that will count as a TEST grade. Please be sure to visit my WEBSITE to obtain any class documents, links, and to view our class’s self-selective reading BLOG. Mrs. Deans Room 234

  2. Self-Selective Reading Blog/ AR Quizzes/Tests Quizzes/Tests: Students should study ELA terms nightly to master quizzes and tests. Waiting to the last minute always result in lower assessment scores. Remember, all notes, videos, worksheets, Slide Shares and PowerPoint lessons for materials taught can be found on Edmodo. In addition, I am still tutoring until Spring Break on Thursdays. Please remember, students who are misbehaving in class WILL NOT be allowed to stay after for tutorial as we have had up to 25 or more students staying for help. Only those who are seriously wanting to be at tutoring should stay. Writing/Projects Classwork/Homework READING: We will continue our study of the NONFICTION genre this quarter. Students should also include nonfiction books to read on their own. Self-Selective Reading & Accelerated Reader: Students who did not meet our class goal of 25pts. at the end of the 2nd quarter, should be reading nightly for at least 20 minutes. Accelerated Reader counts 15% of the overall grade, so it is imperative that students continue to read. A list of AR titles can be obtained on the Media Center’s website. Students had the opportunity of obtaining 15 of their 25 points from our class READALOUDS alone. Please be sure to encourage your son/daughter to read on a consistent basis. It truly is the only way to improve fluency and comprehension. WRITING: Students will complete a major writing piece for their portfolio (Argumentative Writing) which will count as a PROJECT GRADE (20%). All writing for the portfolio will be done in class. PROJECT: Biography/Autobiography Novel Study. Students will complete a layer activity project on the nonfiction novel that they choose to read inside and outside of class. A rubric of requirements and grading will be sent in advance. Classwork: Students must be actively engaged during class and all assignments must be turned in at the end of each class, FINISHED OR NOT. Homework: Please check the agenda nightly to see the homework assigned in class. Students have SOME form of homework Monday-Thursday in ELA class which is usually studying terms and practicing at the various online sites that I have provided throughout the year.
