  2. Key Concepts You Will Learn Today • One way to gather data is through observations. Accurate and complete observations are important for making conclusions about the natural world. • Many of the materials used by people occur naturally on earth and are known as natural resources.

  3. Key Vocabulary • Natural resource – a naturally occurring substance on Earth that is useful. • Renewable resource – a resource that is able to be replenished by natural processes. Examples: water, plants, animals. Examples? • Non-renewable resource – a resource that cannot be replenished by natural processes. Example: fossil fuels. Examples?

  4. Coal • Carbon-based rock that comes from living organisms. • Formed millions of years ago. • Estimated that 56% of U.S. electricity comes from burning coal. http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/chemistry/coal.html

  5. Garnet • General term used to describe different reddish minerals. • Form under pressure much like coal • Relatively abundant on earth. http://library.thinkquest.org/05aug/00461/garnet.htm

  6. Fossilferous Limestone • A sedimentary rock that has fossils in it. • 50% calcium carbonate • Formed millions of years ago from dead marine animals. • Very abundant and found worldwide • http://www.ehow.co.uk/info_8044333_limestone-rock-kids.html
