The Middle School of Plainville • Mission “Inspiring and challenging a respectful and responsible community of learners” (Middle School of Plainville, 2012) • Vision “A Great Place to Learn” (Middle School of Plainville, 2012) • 538 Students in grades 6-8 • Enriching curriculums in Math, Science, Social studies, Language Arts/Reading • Technology influenced lessons : Interactive Projectors, laptops, tablets • Extra curricular programs: • Positive Behavioral Intervention Support (PBIS) • Kids in the Middle Community service (KIM)

Technology Trendsphoto credits: PowerPoint Multiple forms of technology • “Consumption of multiple technologies by young people and the economic, social and technological drivers [that are] transforming education and training” (Becta, 2008 p. 2). Some Examples: (Smart Phones, tablets, laptops, video game consoles) MSP’s vision will allow these mobile devices to be used for classroom instruction both in-house and online.

Being able to understand and use a wide variety of media… Examples are: "Broadcasts, digital videos, social networking, microblogs, tagging, wikis and pandemics” (KnowledgeWorks, 2009) Texting, IMing, emailing

  7. Online CoursesSaving Plainville Money • Online education can provide MSP financial savings. The school can save money in supplies, educator salaries and energy costs. • Ability to purchase e-books, internet- based instructional media • Less materials purchased for students saving money for school and town • The “cost of delivery and core materials [will be reduced] because of the internet connection and professional teachers” (Kahn, 2011). http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/images/Internet_g170.html

  9. Futuring’s Impact on Education: Scanning • Scanning requires locating and using many different informational sources that need to be evaluated. Futuring’s Impact on Education: Polling • Polling is a surveying method that involves inquiring about “people’s views on the future and other topics” (WorldFuture,1966). • Electronic surveys will be used along with oral questioning of individuals of various backgrounds and age groups. The results are more likely to represent a general consensus of society.

The Vision of MSP for 2017 • Variety of technology use in all classrooms • Students/Teacher communication… blogs, social networks • Mobile devices/technology used in classes • Online classes available for students • Educators will be understand and use technology in all classes • Regular technology training for staff and students • Funds will be allotted for technology development in the budget • Citizens of Plainville will be able to see growth and achievements of the technology usage with data collection and through the use of scanning and polling. • Electronic surveying of all staff, students and town citizens will be done on a regular basis to inform all people involved on how technology is assisting the learning process. • Parents and students – online “school choice” option
