  2. “At the final trustee meeting of the year, on December 31, 1918, Lovett recommended that the university authorize the appointment of a dean (who would have “oversight of the attendance, conduct, and discipline of students”), a registrar (for the keeping of all student records), and a bursar (for the oversight of the business and material equipment, as well as the discharging of the duties of a purchasing agent for all departments”).” Boles, John B., University Builder, pages 157-158 Past – Present – Future

  3. “The trustees quickly accepted these recommendations, and at the February 26, 1919 meeting, Lovett asked confirmations of his candidates for each position: Robert Granville Caldwell as dean, Samuel G. McCann as registrar, and John T. McCants as bursar. Each would serve for years and become beloved by students and alumni.” “This trio of advisors – the dean, the registrar, and the bursar – in trusted concert with Lovett essentially governed Rice for the next two decades.” Boles, John B., University Builder, page 158 Past – Present – Future
