  3. Public Safety • Our responsibility is to make the staff, students and visitors of ISU as safe as possible • We work closely with area local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies • As far as police powers, the only difference between ISU Police and any other police agency in Indiana is the area they are assigned to protect

  4. Public Safety is located on N. 6th Street, in the circle drive next to Erickson Hall. This is the location where you purchase:

  5. Student ID Parking Permit

  6. FEEL SAFE @ ISU • Personal safety begins with each of you • Always WALK with others • PARK in well lit and well traveled areas • Only TRAVEL on well lit streets • AVOID narrow dark walkways between buildings • KEEP PERSONAL ARTICLES close • LOCK YOUR DOORS

  7. Feel Safe @ ISU cont. FEEL SAFE @ ISU • Park your vehicle in University lots • Keep all articles out of sight in your vehicle • LOCK your vehicle • Walk with others, especially at dark • If you plan to party, be responsible • When you enter an unfamiliar building, note where the exits are • When a building fire alarm sounds, walk quickly to the nearest exit • Never try to distinguish a fire, GET OUT!

  8. If you need the Police • Visit the Public Safety Building. Someone is there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week • Telephone • Blue Light Phones

  9. Reporting an Emergency by Telephone • From a campus phone dial 911 or 5555. You will get ISU Public Safety • To get ISU Public Safety directly from a cell or a non campus phone , you must dial 812-237-5555 • If you dial 911 from your cell, you will get Vigo County Central Dispatch, NOT ISU POLICE!

  10. Blue Light Phones • Provide a direct link to the Public Safety Department • Can be used to call for emergencies or for general information • There are 30 locations across campus

  11. Reporting a Crime/Incident • If you have been a victim, report it to Public Safety • Don’t allow anyone to make you feel uncomfortable. • If unreported, it frequently becomes worse

  12. Campus Emergency Notification How does ISU notify people during emergencysituations? • All Hazards Siren • Voice Recorded Tornado Warning System • Novell Based Emergency Messaging System • Campus Crime Alert Email • Emergency Text Messaging System (RAVE) • Voice Over Internet Protocol

  13. RAVE TEXT Messaging • This is the best way to be immediately notified when an emergency happens on campus. • A message is received on your cell phone • It is free to sign up, your cell phone carrier may charge. • Go to www.indstate.edu/pubsafety/

  14. Voice Over Internet Protocol Telephones • Newest component of the Emergency Notification System, installed in the Fall of ‘09 • Enables Public Safety to broadcast emergency messages to the classrooms on campus • These telephones can also be used to dial 911 in the event of an emergency in the classroom

  15. The Clery Act • Originally known as the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act. • Named after Jeanne Clery, a 19 year old Lehigh University (PA) freshman who was raped and murdered in her residence hall in 1986 • Requires all colleges and universities to disclose information about crime on or near their campuses • Failure to do this could result in the institution being suspended from participating in financial aid programs

  16. Requirements of Clery • Annual Security Report consists of: • Crime statistics • Policy on safety and security measures • Crime prevention programs • Procedures on the investigation and prosecution of sex offenses • Found at www.indstate.edu/pubsafety/

  17. Requirements of Clery (cont.) • The campus police department is required to keep a CRIME LOG with the most recent 60 days’ worth of information • Requires the issuance of TIMELY WARNINGS ofcrimes or incidents that represent a threat to the campus. This is part of the Emergency Notification System
