  1. Translation

  2. The Anti-Codon • Complementary to codons • Found on tRNA • 1 tRNA per amino acid • Aminoacyl tRNA synthetase

  3. The process where mRNA is converted to a protein (polypeptide chain) using tRNA & ribosomes • Ribosomes • Coordinate pairing betw. tRNA anti-codons & mRNA codons • Composed of rRNA & protein • rRNA transcribed from DNA • Lg. & Sm. Subunits separate until transl. Begins • Subunits constructed in nucleolus

  4. Initiation of Translation Formation of initiation complex • mRNA binds to small subunit • tRNA with N-formylmethionine (F-met) attaches to start codon • Lg. Subunit attaches-f-met in P-site

  5. F-met Elongation Incoming tRNA Binds to codon In A site Entire polypep. Chain transferred To tRNA in Asite Ribosome Moves  1 codon tRNA in Asite moves to P site tRNA in E (exit) site moves out Peptidyl transferase

  6. Termination • elongation continue until stop codon reaches A site • There is no anti-codon for the stop codon!!! Hydrolyzes bond betw. Polypep. & tRNA

  7. Polyribosomes-cluster of ribos. Simultaneously translating same mRNA moleculeallows multiple copies to be made quickly
