  2. Introduction • Public weather forecasts are being generated and disseminated to various stakeholders through media, including national radio and internet. • Improvement of Public weather services has been achieved through the WMO regional project on” severe weather forecasting demonstration for Eastern Region” Burundi together with other Eastern African countries and The Republic of Ethiopa, has participated in a launching workshop on Severe Weather Forecasting Demonstration Programme (SWFDP) that took place from 4 to 8 October 2010 in Nairobi Kenya.

  3. Forecasting Capability Burundi NMHS does not run any Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) model. However, the NMHS does use NWP products downloaded from web sites of International Meteorological Centres such as NOAA/NCEP, UK METOFFICE, ECMWF, Meteo France .etc NWP products from those centres are downloaded and used for analysis and interpretation for the process of improving forecasts and warnings of severe weather wing the country. There is also products from PUMA station.

  4. Weather information dissemination • Burundi NMHS does not have yet a studio for Television presentation, which should enhance weather information dissemination to users; • Burundi NMHS is issuing on daily basis public weather bulletin to the Public and other socio-economiuc sectors through various media, such as national broadcasting radio, emails; • The bulletin issued is not a warning of severe weather event, because Burundi NMHS has not yet developed criteria for issuing specific severe weather warnings; • The users of information are among others, the general public including farmers, various governmental institutions such as Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Water and Environmental Management, Disaster Management and Civil Protection Authority (DMCPA), Red Cross Society and international agencies such as FAO and WFP,

  5. Example of The Weather Bulletin

  6. Challenges • Need to raise awareness among users on using and interpretation • of weather information and warnings; • There is a lack of sufficient feedback from the users; • Need of MOU between Met Service and other partners such as • (Disaster Management and Civil Protection Authority (DMCPA), • Red Cross Society );

  7. Conclusion The effective interface between Burundi NMHS and Disaster Management Agencies, Red Cross Society, Media and user communities is highly needed in the Early warning System (EWS) in the country.
