  1. MOTIVATION

  2. Maslow

  3. Physiological • the most basic needs vital to survival, such as the need for water, air, food and sleep. Maslow believed all needs become secondary until these physiological needs are met.

  4. Safety • important for survival, but they are not as demanding as the physiological needs. • Examples of security needs include a desire for steady employment, safe neighborhoods and shelter from the environment.

  5. Social • These include needs for belonging, love and affection. • Examples are friendships, romantic attachments and families

  6. Esteem • These include the need for things that reflect on self-esteem, personal worth, social recognition and accomplishment.

  7. Self-actualization • Self-actualizing people are self-aware, concerned with personal growth, less concerned with the opinions of others and interested fulfilling their potential.

  8. Maslow

  9. Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation • Intrinsic motivation occurs when people are internally motivated to do something because it either brings them pleasure, they think it is important, or they feel that what they are learning is significant. • Extrinsic motivation comes into play when a student is compelled to do something or act a certain way because of factors external to him or her (like money or good grades).

  10. Problems with extrinsic motivation • 1. It’s not sustainable - As soon as you withdraw the punishment or reward, the motivation disappears. • 2. You get diminishing returns - If the punishment or rewards stay at the same levels, motivation slowly drops off. To get the same motivation next time requires a bigger reward. • 3. It hurts intrinsic motivation - Punishing or rewarding people for doing something removes their own innate desire to do it on their own. From now on you must punish/reward every time to get them to do it."

  11. What motivates you? • Record your results in the margin, or on a scrap piece of paper • Either choose A or B • There will be 5 statements, pick the answer that most suits you

  13. You are to write an essay for a class, you • A: pick a topic you know there will be a lot of information on, but doesn’t really interest you • B: pick a topic that you find interesting, but know it will be hard to find a lot of information on

  14. Your English teacher says you must read one book this semester and provides a list of suggested books, you • A : select one of the books from the list and read it • B: do not select one of the books and instead read 5 others of your own choosing

  15. Which do you feel you learn more from? • A: studying for class so that you will get a good grade • B: studying for class because you are interested in the topic
