  1. EEPROM Workshop October 12, 2005 Larry Longden Sr. Director, Marketing & Technology Maxwell Technologies

  2. Maxwell’s Strategy

  3. Guaranteed Supply • Managing Supply • Die Banking • Strategic Suppliers • Market Forecasting • Guaranteed Source of Supply for Program Lifetime • Highest Performance • Fastest Speed • Higher Density • Lower Power Consumption • Qualified Die • Radiation Mitigation • System Analysis • Screened and Guaranteed Parts • Rad-Pak, Xray-Pak, LPT, TMR • Performance Guaranteed for Mission Orbit/Lifetime Guaranteed Performance Radiation Guarantee Microelectronics Product Strategy

  4. Guaranteed Source of Supply Hitachi 1Mb EEPROM Example • Space industry standard • Hitachi EOL issued in Jun 01 • Maxwell establishes long-term support • Hitachi providing direct technical support • Negotiated exclusive extended EOL period • Survey of market for projected usage • Established die bank program for customers • Developed forecast of die needs for next 5 – 7 years Maxwell purchased 100,000+ die to support the Space Market!

  5. EEPROM • Based On Hitachi 58HCN1001A Die • Available as Rad-Pak®, Xray-Pak™ and Rad Tolerant Products • Available in 5.0V or 3.3V • Available in The Following Configurations • 32K x 8 • 128K x 8 • 512K x 8 • 256K x 32 • 512K x 40

  9. SCS750B New Features • Improved HW cache coherency • Improved data throughput (2X to 3X Better) • Programmable DC/DC Converters • User controlled dynamic power management • Processing power & Power consumption • Highly reliable EEPROM SuROM • Dual-redundant SuROM devices • Safe in-flight programmability • Auto swapping • Auto controller/peripheral configuration • Cold sparing • Expanded 1553 memory (64kB) • Improved DMA • 3 channels – SDRAM Scrubbing and 2 users channels • Halt control for suspend/resume • 32 bit boundaries • SDRAM/SDRAM & cPCI/SDAM • Improved error logging • Front panel test connector • Front panel flight connector

  10. Detailed SCS750 Block Diagram

  11. EEPROM Market Issues • Suppliers are not notified of potential problems! • Maxwell is committed to supply product that meets your needs – no exceptions • Improvements in product screening can only occur based on failure evaluations • Product failures must be evaluated! • Most problems are never verified – no resolution • Perception becomes reality – not supported by data • Proper application is important! • Proper control of RESET input is required to prevent data corruption • Proper programming is required to ensure error-free operation

  12. Conclusion • Hitachi 1Mb EEPROM is conservatively specified • All data retention/programming problems can be eliminated by proper screening • Date Retention not degraded by TID • Endurance not degraded by TID • Proper system design provides a very reliable solution for space • EEPROM enables reliable, reconfigurable systems
