  1. Cabot Factory Finish Product Training 2004

  2. What are paints and stains made of ? • Binders • Pigments • Additives • Resins • Solvents

  3. What are paints and stains made of ? • Binders: Hold the coating together – act like “glue.” • Pigments: Provide color, UV protection and hiding to coatings. • Additives: Give coatings their unique properties. • Resins: Synthetic or vegetable materials that are used as a base for coatings. • Solvents: (water or mineral spirits) allow for the material to be suspended, and once it evaporates from the coating, it allows for the film formation.

  4. “Primer” on Primers • Primers help to promote adhesion. • Help properties for sealing the surface and making more uniform appearance. • Primers can be either clear or pigmented. • Lower pigment levels – must be topcoated. • Primers often are formulated to help resist bleeding or discoloration of the coating from tannins and other resins found in wood.

  5. Acrylic – most are water reducible Holds color and gloss better than oil-based products Better flexibility of film for longer life – able to expand and contract with wood. Acrylic resin materials have larger molecular particle size and material is “thicker” on the surface for improved durability. Acrylic resins can have better adhesion to surfaces Alkyd – resins are commonly called “oil” based, reduce with mineral spirits or paint thinner Alkyd resins are harder than most acrylics Resin is oxidized from the environment and often will fade sooner than acrylics. Alkyds are the best option for areas like decking surfaces where a harder finish is needed (doors, windows, floors). Better penetration into dense hardwoods than acrylics. Acrylic vs. Alkyd

  6. Stains are used for adding color and protecting wood substrates. Stains penetrate into the wood, don’t form a film. Lower pigment levels and thinner viscosity allow for penetration and wood texture and grain to show. Recoat every 3-5 years Paints form a film on the surface and protect the substrate. Higher pigment and binder levels – normally last longer than stains. Available in variety of gloss levels: flat, satin, semi-gloss and gloss. Better mildew resistance. Recoat every 7-10 years. Stain vs. PaintWhat’s the difference?

  7. Product PerformanceWhy are some paints better? • Higher pigment levels and use of pure resins in formulations will help coatings perform better. • Higher solids material will offer more protection to the surface and act as a sacrificial coat to protect the wood • 100% pure resins will perform better than blended resins (vinyl-acrylic vs. 100% acrylic). • Cabot uses only the finest raw materials in manu-facturing, and each product goes through a complete quality control process before leaving the facility

  8. Why Factory Finish? • No weather delays – available year round • Materials arrive ready to install • Adds value and increases total price of sale – and profit • Normally less expensive than field application • Better performance lasts longer • Warranties

  9. Cabot Bleaching Oil • Unique 100-year-old product that accelerates the weathering of wood surfaces. • Actual bleach crystals used to grey the wood. • Product reacts with salts and water to grey the wood more uniformly. • Alkyd resin is used with bleaching oil for unique appearance and performance. • Cabot is the only company to produce this product - there are no other comparable products on the market.

  10. Cabot Factory FinishTM • Cabot Factory Finish is a unique 100% acrylic coating specially formulated for machine application. • Unlimited colors available • 74 standard Cabot colors • Solid opaque finish protects the wood • Even, consistent color • Provides superior moisture protection and mildew resistance • 15 year warranty

  11. Cabot Semi-Transparentand Semi-SolidTM stains • Available in Oil or 100 % pure acrylic formulations • Provides protection, allowing the wood texture and grain to show • 74 standard Cabot colors – unlimited custom colors available • 5-year warranty on acrylic 1100/1300

  12. Cabot Clear Solution • Cabot Oil or Water-based Clear Solution • Some UV protection • Clear wood look – very little pigment • Recoat every 1-2 years • No warranty

  13. CustomColors and Tinting • All Factory Finish products can be matched for unlimited custom color options. • Cabot can match other competitor colors in Cabot products. • Colors should be approved by the customer prior to running the materials. • Verify colors prior to application and always order enough material to complete the job. • Finisher will intermix all the product during application to ensure color is consistent from start to finish.

  14. Factory FinishApplication Method • Machines consistently apply the materials for proper film spread rates and coverage. • Materials are in controlled environment to insure proper drying and performance. • Materials are checked for moisture content prior to painting. • Coating thickness is checked with a rolling wet film gauge. • Equipment is checked to insure consistent application is achieved during run from beginning to end. • Cabot products use the finest raw material ingredients allowing for extended warranties of the coating and material applied to the wood. • Factory application will last longer.

  15. Adding ValueIncreasing Profits • Products arrive at job site or retailer yard packaged and ready for installation. • Extended product warranties available – up to 15 years on wood. • Marketing opportunities to grow business year round. • Increase your sales and profit with Cabot Factory Finished materials.
