  2. The Union • Union commander William Rosecrans. • 58,222 Union soldiers were engaged in this battle. • The union encountered 16,170 casualties.

  3. William Starke Rosecrans • William was born in Delaware City, Ohio on September 6th 1819. • Was a graduate of 1842 at West Point. • Nickname was “Old Rosy”. • Was appointed as the Brigadier General. • Was very successful at Rich Mountain, Virginia.

  4. The Confederacy • Confederate commander – Braxton Bragg • There were 66,326 Confederate soldiers that were engaged in this battle. • The Confederates came across 18,454.

  5. Braxton Bragg • Born in Warrenton County, North Carolina on March 22nd 1817. • Went to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. • He graduated in 1837, at the early age of 20. • He was placed in charge of the Louisiana Army in February 1861. • Was named the brigadier general in the army of confederacy on March 7th.

  7. THE BATTLE! • The battle took place in Georgia on September 18-20 1863. • The Union made attempts to force the Confederates out of Chattanooga. • Union was successful, used his forces to chase the Confederates out of Chattanooga and forced them to go south.

  8. The Battle Cont. • Bragg wanted to reoccupy Chattanooga and meet Rosecrans Army. • Wanted to fight Union Army out of Chattanooga to get the land back. • On September 18th Bragg marched his army north to fight the Union. • Were unable to break the Union line even after a hammering attack.
