Project Summary • Expand and enhance existing training structure for GOES • WMO Virtual Lab: Monthly Regional Focus Group • WMO blended training: virtual + face to face • VISIT and SHyMet: materials and structure • Leverage: US training materials • Promote satellite climatology applications • Preserve and strengthen Capacity of the Region
3. Motivation/Justification • Supports NOAA Mission Goal(s): • Weather and Water, Commerce and Transportation, Climate Enhanced training will prepare forecaster/manager on how to utilize imagery and products to provide services in these areas. • Supports NOAA commitments to WMO Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS) • WMO Virtual Lab Management Group (VLMG) reports to CGMS • WMO-WP-19: 5-year training plan presented at CGMS-36, 2008 • i) to rely more on blended learning methods • ii) to reaffirm and enhance the role of Regional Focus Groups • Supports NOAA commitments to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS)
4. Methodology • Provide guidance for Monthly Focus Group of the Americas and Caribbean and for other member countries and disciplines in WMO. • Add new products (eg. dust detection) • Add additional lectures on tropical / mid-latitude topics. • Coordinate with students and researchers in Central America and the Caribbean on satellite climatology applications

Methodology • Provide support, training materials and guidance for WMO face to face and virtual training events. • 2-week WMO satellite training in China – Fall 2009 Participants and instructors at the WMO sponsored Regional Training Course on the Use of Environmental Satellite Data In Meteorological Applications for RA III and RA IV in Cordoba, Argentina, 22 September – 3 October, 2008

Expected Outcomes • Workforce that is knowledgeable about imagery, products and services offered through the GOES program and capable of making informed weather decisions. • Expansion of Focus Group activities in the Americas and the Caribbean and expansion to other WMO regions and areas of expertise. • Cooperation and sharing of information and products among countries. • Publication describing training activities.

FY10 Accomplishments • Support of monthly virtual Regional Focus Group (RFG) sessions and additional training lectures • Ongoing monthly briefings for the RFG for the Caribbean and Central and South America • Special briefs on Volcanic ash detection using MSG imagery • Widen the scope of the WMO/CGMS Virtual Laboratory to serve training needs of emerging scientific communities in developing countries. • Participation in the 5th Virtual Laboratory Management Group (VLMG) meeting and Training Seminar in Beijing, 12-16 July 2010 • Coordination with the VL Technical Support Officer (TSO)

7. FY10 Accomplishments • Archive satellite cloud climatology products for Central America and the Caribbean. • On hold since January 2010 due to an unforeseen change in data reception capabilities at CSU. • Discussions ongoing with Barbados and countries in Central America to evaluate the existing 12-year image sets.
