  4. 3500 BCE • Little social stratification • Village economy was cereal agriculture • Traded with neighboring villages but trade was not center of economy Nagada 1

  5. 3300 BCE • Hierakonpolis (Upper Egypt) • Wasn’t in a city form but acted like a city • Population grew from a few hundred to thousands within 500 years • Hiera was the city Menes unified Egypt Nagada 2

  6. 3100-2686 BCE • Irrigation systems improved • Step pyramids were made • Peak: trading, raiding and mining inclined • Extended to Nubia • Buhen fortress decined at 2400 BCE Old Kingdom Egypt

  7. Central authority weakened • Nomarchs gained power had private armies and controlled locally • 2181 BCE Kingdom fell • Split into two regions: Herakleopolis in North, Thebes in South Decline of Old Kingdom

  8. 2050-1750 BCE • 2050 BCE King Mentuhotpe (of Thebes) reunited kingdom • Trade grew in two patterns- • Local caravan trade in spices, resin, and minerals with Nile Delta and Palestine (Northern Sinai and Persia) • Long distance trade by ship through Mediterranean • State gained more organization and power • Egypt administraters effectively spread power into Nubia and Middle East Middle Kingdom
