  3. Did You Know? • When you sleep about 5 liters of blood is pumped through your body every minute. • In an average lifetime, the heart beats more than 2 billion times and pumps several hundred million liters of blood through the many thousands of km of blood vessels in the body.

  4. The Components of the Heart • The heart is NOT a single pump! It actually has two pumps! • One pump is located on the right side of the heart. The second pump is located on the left side of the heart. • A thick wall of tissue, the septum, separates the heart into a right side and left side. Each side has two chambers.

  5. The Chambers of the Heart • The two chambers are: • An atrium (which receives blood) • The right atrium is smaller than the right ventricle. • A ventricle (which pumps out blood) • The left atrium is smaller than the left ventricle • Inside the heart, blood flow is controlled by one-way valves. These valves act like gates between the chambers of the heart. • The structure of the valves keeps blood flowing through the heart in a one-way pattern.

To bring the _____________________ to the cells. The right side of the heart just sent the blood to get some oxygen in the lungs, so now we have to get that oxygenated blood to the body cells. The body cells have also made more ______________ (using the last delivery of oxygen) and they need that carbon dioxide to be picked up – before it poisons them! Why go to the lungs? To get more ____________________ The blood just came back from the body and so the oxygen was given to the cells. The blood also picked up ___________________from the cells. So the carbon dioxide has to be brought to the lungs so it can be breathed out (exhaled).

To bring the oxygen to the cells. The right side of the heart just sent the blood to get some oxygen in the lungs, so now we have to get that oxygenated blood to the body cells. The body cells also need the carbon dioxide they have made (using the last delivery of oxygen) to be picked up. Why go to the lungs? To get more oxygen. The blood just came back from the body and so the oxygen was given to the cells. The blood also picked up carbon dioxide from the cells. So the carbon dioxide has to be brought to the lungs so it can be breathed out (exhaled).

Right Side of Your Heart • The Right Atrium, as it is called, receives blood from the upper and lower body through the superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava. • The right atrium is the larger of the two atria, having very thin walls. • The right atrium opens into the right ventricle that only allows the blood to flow from the atria into the ventricle, but not in the reverse direction. • The right ventricle pumps the blood to the lungs to be reoxygenated.

  13. Left Side of Your Heart • The left atrium receives blood from the lungs via the four pulmonary veins. It is smaller than the right atrium, but has thicker walls. It opens into the left ventricle and again is a one way valve. The left ventricle pumps the blood throughout the body.

  16. The Function of theCirculatory System • The circulatory system circulates blood around the body and delivers food, oxygen and other materials to body cells and carries carbon dioxide and other wastes products away from body cells.

  17. The Heart • The heart is a muscle that rests only between beats. • The heart is not much larger than a fist and is located slightly to the left of the center of your chest. • The heart beat, or the heart’s rhythm, is controlled by an area of nerve tissue within the heart.

  18. The Heart Has Two Sides • The right atrium, receives blood from the upper and lower body through the superior vena cava.
