As you read you will analyze and distinguish between facts and opinions in the text. Good readers distinguish between facts and opinions to understand what the author wants them to learn and what the author wants them to think.

  14. Broccoli Broccoli is full of vitamins and minerals. It is green and firm. It has a thick stem with several growths sprouting out and forming what looks like a cross between flowers and cabbage heads. Most people eat these growths. Broccoli can be eaten raw, steamed, fried, or boiled. It can be frozen and cooked in the microwave. Broccoli James says: “Broccoli tastes bad. My mother puts broccoli in salads, and I have to pick it out because I don’t like it. When my mother cooks broccoli it smells up the whole house. I think broccoli is gross!” Ethan says: “Broccoli is awesome! I eat broccoli every day. It is a perfect food. I mix it in with a bag of celery and carrots and take it to lunch. It tastes good. It’s crispy, and it’s good for me. I love steamed broccoli with a little melted cheese on top. That’s my favorite side dish in the whole world!”
