TP2-1 TP1-1 computer kV or kV2 Meter w/ RSX board (485 mode) Jumpers TP2-1 TP1-1 TP1-2 TP1-2 Standard 4-conductor crossover phone extension cable with RJ-11 terminations on both ends Notes: 1) TP1-1 = Twisted Pair set #1, wire #1 2) TP1-2 = Twisted Pair set #1, wire #2 3) TP2-1 = Twisted Pair set #2, wire #1 4) Jumpers must be added as shown and do not connect together where they cross in the diagram. 5) B&B Electronics web site at http:\\www.bb-elec.com 6) Black Box web site at http:\\www.blackbox.com 7) For clarity, the diagram does not show manufacturer’s connections on FM013 terminals to RJ-11 sockets. 8) Once installed, the meter may be read and programmed by connecting a phone line extension cable between the remotely located RJ-11 jack and the RJ-11 jack of the RS-232/RS-485 converter plugged into the serial port of the computer. MeterMate software communicates as if a Smartcoupler is attached to the optical port on the meter cover. You must make sure the Port Configuration in MMDOS is set to 9600 when communicating with a kV2 meter. 9) Make sure RSX board is set to RS-485 mode operation, per GEH-7275. 10) As with any communication signal line, it should be isolated from power cables and shielded properly. Ground the shield and common conductor on the meter end only. Make sure it is a twisted pair type of cable. M.B. Coit 9/27/01

Cord (Crossover) Black Box (FM013) 485/232 Converter Additional Notes: 1) The RSX board limits communication speed to 9600 bps, therefore no termination resistors are required. 2) No bias resistors are needed beyond those provided in the B&B RS232/485 converter. 3) The RSX Board contains no termination or bias resistors. The RS485 transmitter/receiver is optically isolated from the kV/kV2 Meter circuitry. 4) It is recommended that the shield and common conductor of the twisted pair cable be grounded only at the meter end of the cable. No 100 ohm series resistors (for current limiting) are needed in the ground circuit in this case because of the optical isolation of the RSX Board transmitter/receiver circuit and because of the single end grounding. 5) For long cable runs, especially those with outdoor exposure, transient protection is recommended. Shunt protection to earth ground as shown in B&B Application Note Figure 4.7 is recommended only at the meter end of the cable. A "TVS device" rated at 6-8 volts should be used. 6) Suggested cable similar to Quabbin P/N 8504 (2-pair, 24 AWG stranded, polyethylene insulation, chrome grey PVC jacket, overall shield, RS 232 V.11, or V.35, Low Capacitance cable.
