LBT Q4 2007 Engineering Review

This report outlines the key engineering developments and progress made during Q4 2007 for the RSU project. The LBT's hexapod has successfully passed lab tests and is now shipped, while the M2 mirror is close to completion amidst ongoing fabrication. Challenges include the inability to test the hexapod control with high-level software. Upcoming activities include the dry run installation of the M2 hub and in-situ testing of the hexapod on the M2 swing arm, with a potential system readiness for full installation in Q1 2008 if the M2 is completed on schedule.

  2. Highlights and Progress(Q4/2007) Mirror approaching completion at SESO Hexapod passed lab test and shipped to LBT

  3. Open Issues M2 mirror still being fabricated, close to completion, barring disaster. Have been unable to test hexapod control with high level software as yet.

  4. Planning • Schedule • Dry run installation of M2 hub in second week of January ‘08. Intend to test-fit and test-run hexapod in-situ on the M2 swing arm, Using the alignment telescope we can check that high-level software commands lead to sensible results. • If M2 is completed by late January, system could be ready for full install in Q1 ‘08
