Mali Declines • After Mansa Musa death, different parts of Mali began to rebel • In the east, Songhai gained control near the bend of the Niger River led by Sunni Ali • In the north, Berbers seized much of Mali territory and captured Timbuktu • By 1500, rebels and invaders had reduced Mali to a small area

  7. Askia Muhammad • Muhammad wanted to control the throne of Songhai Empire • People felt Sunni Ali’s son did not practice Islam the correct way • He divided Songhai into provinces • Islam spread throughout Africa

Songhai Falls • Outside areas, as Islam began to spread, some African’s still believed in their own spirits • Muhammad son would remove Muhammad and declared himself king • Morocco forces raided Songhai salt mines in the 1580’s and captured Timbuktu in 1591 • West African’s lived in kinship in agricultural villages

  9. Central & Southern Africa • Central Africa is covered with tropical rainforest • Southern Africa Immense grasslands (elephants, giraffes, lions, zebras etc…) • People in this region belong to variety of ethnic groups • Bantu began to move throughout southern & eastern Africa

  10. Coastal areas begin to emerge • East African merchants began trade across the Indian Ocean • Kilwa became most important city • Asian merchants could trade in Kilwa • With trading and cultural interaction between Arabs and Africans a new language came about (Swahili)
