Multidisciplinary Clinical Research Scholars Program • Objective: • Stimulate multidisciplinary clinical research training and education • Enhance career development of early investigators from multiple disciplines, specialties and subspecialties • Establish a critical mass of national Programs devoted to developing an integrated, multidisciplinary and diverse workforce
Training Future Leaders in Clinical Research • Elements • Didactic: study design, statistics, informatics, ethics, grant writing, team leaderships and management, grant writing • Research: innovative ways of using multiple disciplines to study an important health problem • Use the expertise of multiple disciplines • Team mentoring by multiple disciplines • Shared Clinical Research Support Facility
University of PittsburghClinical Research Scholars Program • Based in the Schools of the Health Science • Medicine, GSPH, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Rehab • Multidisciplinary Advisory Committee • Senior investigators from all of the Schools • Training • CRTP, additional new courses • Multidisciplinary Research based in Centers and Institutes • Team Mentoring • Shared Clinical Research Support Facility developed by CRHC • Evaluation
University of PittsburghClinical Research Scholars Program • MAC—Senior investigators from all of the Schools • Representatives from all of the Schools of the Health Sciences, GCRC, Center for Minority Health, Associate Dean of Graduate Studies; represents 20 disciplines • Meets monthly and guides direction, focus and components: • Select Scholars • Review, monitor and recommend changes in curriculum • Approve the individually customized training program for Scholars • Monitoring and evaluation of each Scholar • Monitoring and evaluation of effectiveness of the program • Participate in biannual review of each Scholar’s progress report and their plans • Executive Committee
University of PittsburghClinical Research Scholars Program • Training: CRTP, additional new courses • CRTP is well established and provides an MS in Clinical Research • Additional courses: • Scientific Writing and Presentation Skills • Best Practices in Clinical Research • Leadership, Team Building and Innovation Seminars • Individualized advanced educational program: availability of other MS/MPH degrees, PhD degrees and courses in Schools of the Health Sciences
University of PittsburghClinical Research Scholars Program • Research based in Centers and Institutes • Provide a 5 year proposal with sections similar to the NIH guidelines • Provide details of what would be accomplished during 2 years and how it will be used to develop further grants • Provide details of K application or other grant proposals to continue research
University of PittsburghClinical Research Scholars Program • Team mentoring • 2 or more disciplines, specialties and subspecialties • Integrated joint mentoring • Project should demonstrate the importance of input from multiple disciplines • Projects require the skill sets of mentors from different disciplines • Mentors meet together with sufficient frequency to make important contributions to the mentee’s research • Mentors communicate regularly with the mentee and each other • Letters must show strong evidence of team approach and integration of the disciplines in research
University of PittsburghClinical Research Scholars Program • Support • Scholar salary: 75-100% support for 2 years • Research Project: up to $25 K per year • Shared Clinical Research Core: epi, biostat, data management expertise • Travel, tuition, fees and books • Support development of grants
University of PittsburghClinical Research Scholars Program • Applications will be reviewed in terms of • Background and clinical training • Have the ‘fire in the belly’ for clinical research • The proposed research training program will help them develop into an independent investigators • Evidence is provided that team mentoring will work • Have been able to describe a research plan that is interesting, innovative and feasible and involves multiple disciplines to make it happen • There is a strong research environment and strong commitment to the candidate
