Discover the challenges and solutions of sub-sampling laminated sediment cores with conventional and diagonal cutting methods. Learn how parallel cutting may introduce bias but diagonal cutting can provide more accurate seasonal representation. Explore techniques like LL-channel splitting and centi-slicer slicing for effective sub-sampling.

We like this! Sub-sampling from laminated sediment: We don’t like this.
Because… 31 Dec. 24:00 pm 01 Jan. 00:00 am autumn 31 Dec. 24:00 pm spring 01 Jan. 00:00 am Impossible Possible!! Parallel cutting produces seasonally-biased sub-samples unless you make this perfect cutting (which is not possible). Diagonal cutting (which is possible) is almost equivalent to the perfect cutting in terms of representation of seasons.
SG06 sub-sampling-1 Splitting core into bars by LL-channel,
SG06 sub-sampling-2 then slicing bars diagonally by centi-slicer.
