  2. Controlling the Empire • The military- the Spanish army • Spanish armies in Germany paid themselves • The Spanish military was the most effective because it helped in conquering territories they wanted • Control was established and maintained-The early 17th century until 1714

  3. Collapse of Empire • The Spanish Empire started to decline due to political, military, economic and social decline.’ • Another effect of the collapse-the plague and emigration • Charles II died which caused the Habsburg Empire to end, when he was alive was rise of the Spanish empire • War between France, England and Austria broke out

  5. 1643 – was then end of Spanish Dominance in Europe • 1640-French, the Catalonians, Neapolitans, and Portuguese rose up in revolt against the Spanish • 1714- grandson of Louis XIV becomes king • Spain loses to Belgium, Luxemburg, Milan, Naples, Sardinia, Minorca and Gibraltar.

  6. How does a state gain/lose power over others? • Gain – using military force, enforcing laws, favoring people’s needs • Lose – political, social and economic decline, losing wars
