  2. Remember: Popes and Kings often worked with or against each other throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

  3. Luther vs. Charles V • Luther encouraged princely control of religion in their states • Charles V banned Luther from the empire • Luther was protected by German princes

  4. States’ Religious Rights • States claimed the right to determine their own religion • States seized church property (political interests superseded religious) • Princes organized into the League of Schmalkald -supported by Francis I of France

  5. Class Warfare • Peasants revolted in Germany, adopting Lutheranism as their religion • Peasants applied principle of “equality of all believers” • Used religious base to fight for social reform • Luther condemned these “filthy swine” and called for brutal repression • Repression of peasants sparked the Anabaptist movement

  6. Peace of Augsburg, 1555 • Francis I joined forces with Ottoman Turks • Turks/French surround Holy Roman Empire and Turks attack • Rebellious princes claim states rights • Peace of Augsburg gives states the right to choose their religion (Catholicism/Lutheranism)
