  1. How did the Civil War affect the US and its people?

  2. The Civil War was one of the most important events in US History. It continues to have a powerful impact on people. • Every year, Civil War sites, such as Gettysburg, are visited by millions of tourists, and thousands reenact Civil War battles. • In this lesson you will be assigned a group of Americans from the Civil War period. You will work together to create an interactive dramatization that shows and explains some of these effects. The presentation will involve members of the audience and will include props and costumes, as well as primary source excerpts.

  3. Read Section 1 • Read Section 1, Introduction • How did the Civil War affect the life of Wilmer McLean? • Which other groups of Americans were affected by the Civil War? • In what ways might these groups have been affected by the war?

  4. Read Section 2 • Read Section 2, Four Long Years of War. After reading each subsection in Section2, respond to the following in your notebook: • The Anaconda Plan Begins to Squeeze the Confederacy • The Emancipation Proclamation Changes Union War Aims • Turning the Tide: Vicksburg and Gettysburg • Total War Forces the South to Surrender

  5. Reference Student Handout (A-H) • You will be come experts on how the Civil War affected a particular group in America during that time. You will work together to create an interactive dramatization that shows and explains some of these effects. The presentation will involve members of the audience and will include props and costumes, as well as primary source excerpts. • Distribute materials to groups. • Assign each group one of the Civil War groups • Give each group a copy of Student Handouts A-H that corresponds to the Civil War group they have ben assigned.

  6. Review steps for creating an interactive dramatization • Step 1: Assign roles • Step 2: Learn about the effects of the war on your subgroup • Step 3: Plan your interactive dramatization • The dramatization is laid out for you… you must apply the information you learned in your reading to complete the portions of you dramatization. • Step 4: Brainstorm ideas for costumes and props • Step 5: Rehearse your dramatization *You will be given the remainder of the class period to plan your skit. You must be prepared to present tomorrow!

  7. Arrange the classroom • Clear desks and the other classroom furniture so there are two large “stages”, one at either end of the classroom.

  9. Conduct the first pair of interactive dramatizations • Groups will act out their interactive dramatization, then lead a popcorn read of their researched section. • Students will take notes based on the presentations and the notes read.
