  1. Technology:Tools for Differentiation Kim Broadbent Provo School District March 2013 Email: kimb@provo.edu Website: http://www.trainer.provo.edu/ Kim/index.htm

  2. Why Technology? We are preparing kids for their future, not our past. - Daniel Pink

  3. Differentiation “Differentiated instruction is the process of ensuring that • what a student learns, • how he or she learns it, and • how the student demonstrates what he or she has learned is a match for that student’s readiness level, interests, and preferred mode of learning.” - Carol Ann Tomlinson

  4. Differentiation • Students become the center of the teaching and learning that occurs in the classroom. • Four paths to differentiation: • Content-what we teach • Delivery of Instruction-how we teach • Resources and Materials • Product or Assessment-evidence of learning

  5. Differentiation • Feedback is essential! Assessments should be specific and ongoing. • Pre-assessment • Formative assessment • Summative assessment • Technology makes it simple to administer assessments and easier to disaggregate data and determine individual needs.

  6. Technology Provo Uses for Differentiation • Computers (laptops and desktops) • Run a variety of software applications • Accessibility Options • Interactive Whiteboards (Promethean) • iPads • Individualized Apps • Accessibility Options

  7. Computers Whether they are desktops or laptops, computers with the appropriate applications can greatly enhance and individualize student learning.

  8. Literacy Assessments • Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) • DIBELS • Scholastic Phonics Inventory (SPI) • District Interim Assessments (Datawise or UTIPS Core) • Progress Monitoring • End of Level CRTs

  9. Literacy Applications • Foundation Literacy Programs • System 44 • Read 180* • Supplemental Literacy Programs • MimioSprout • Read About • Reading A-Z and RAZ Kids • Reading Plus

  10. Numeracy Assessments • Scholastic Math Inventory(SMI) • District Interim Assessments (Datawise or UTIPS Core) • Progress Monitoring • End of Level CRTs

  11. Numeracy Applications • Foundation Numeracy Programs • Math 180 • TransMath • Supplemental Numeracy Programs • FASTT Math (facts) • Fraction Nation (fractions) • Go Solve (word problems) • iXL Math website • Khan Academy website

  12. Interactive Whiteboards Interactive whiteboards allow greater physical interactivity with learning content. This can be done individually, in small groups or as an entire class. The ability to move, manipulate and interact with content on the board is one of its greatest benefits.

  13. Why Promethean? • All interactive whiteboards can engage students. However, the Promethean software, with its multiple layers, allows for more levels of manipulation. • Created flipcharts can be reset and reused with multiple students or groups. • Learner response systems allow students to respond individually to questions and teachers to monitor their progress. • Promethean Planet has over 60,000 free resources.

  14. iPads iPads have the “touch-ability” factor that engages students in a unique way. They like that iPads can be held in their hands and taken anywhere. With over 700,000 apps available, it is likely teachers will be able to find the exact app a student needs.

  15. Literacy Apps • iWrite Words (free version sample) • Kindergarten.com receptive and problem solving apps • Minimod Reading apps • Sentence Builder apps • Sequences by EdNinja • Speech with Miloapps

  16. Numeracy Apps • Balloon Pop Challenge • Jungle Coins • Jungle Fractions • Jungle Time • Kosmic Math • Math Drills • Pop Math Maths Plus

  17. Mixed Skill Apps • Brain App XL • Brain Exercise and More Brain Exercise with Dr. Kawashima • TeachMe apps (Toddler, Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade)

  18. Assistive/Specialty Apps • Articulation Station • Proloquo2Go • Look in My Eyes apps • Dexteria • Letter Reflex • P.O.V. Spatial Reasoning Skills • The Social Express

  19. Productivity Apps • Comic Life • Garage Band • iMovie • Keynote • Pages • Dropbox
