2. The Origin of the Holocaust • The Holocaust has it’s origin at the Wannsee Conference held in the outskirts of Berlin, Germany (pictured bottom right is where the conference was held) in January of 1942. • The “Final Solution” was decided by a group of high ranking Nazis, headed by Reinhard Heydrich (pictured top right), issuing their final report to SS chief Heinrich Himmler

3. The Origin of the Holocaust • The signed plan that was agreed upon at the Wannsee Conference, pictured right. • This document and others detail the plans for the “Final Solution,” to the Jewish problem for the Nazis.

4. The Planners of the Holocaust • Heinrich Himmler, chief of the Schutzstaffel (SS, German for “Protective Services,” pictured right) and Reinhard Heydrich (in the lower photograph, second from the left) were the chief planners of the “Final Solution” to the problem of the Jews. • In the upper right-hand photo Heinrich Himmler is seen visiting the concentration camp at Dachau in 1936.

5. The Early Stages of the Holocaust • Early on, following scientific studies and methodology, the Nazi SS used a variety of methods to execute mass numbers of Jewish people in Europe. • Pictured right is an early gas truck used to pump exhaust into enclosed buildings. • Ultimately gas, though another type, was used to execute Jewish people in mass numbers.

6. The Early Stages of the Holocaust • Early on, during the initial military campaigns of German forces, executions were carried out in the field and mass graves were dug. • This photo entitled, “The last Jew in Vinnitsa,” captures such executions. • This photos was taken just before this man was shot in the back of the head.

7. The Process • Jewish people, gypsies, homosexuals, the old, the infirm and sickly were transported in railroad cars (cattle cars) to locations like this. • Pictured to the left is Auschwitz, an execution camp. • For many people this is where the end of their lives occurred and this was the last thing they would see.

8. The Process Cont’d • Gas pellets would be dropped from above the “shower” rooms where those to be executed were put into under the pretense of showering and delousing. • Once dead the bodies would be moved into giant crematoriums like this one pictured on the bottom left. • The bodies were disposed of to prevent any evidence from being found.

9. Work Camps • Works camps were also employed to utilize the slave labor of millions of people labeled undesirable. • Pictured left is the work camp side of Auschwitz. • The top of the sign reads, “Work Means Freedom.”
