  4. Standard • SS8H3 - The student will analyze the role of Georgia in the American Revolution. • a. Explain the immediate and long term causes of the American Revolution and their impact on Georgia; include the French and Indian War (Seven Years War), Proclamation of 1763, Stamp Act, Intolerable Acts, and the Declaration of Independence. • b. Analyze the significance of people and events in Georgia on the Revolutionary War; include Loyalists, patriots, Elijah Clarke, Austin Dabney, Nancy Hart, Button Gwinnett, Lyman Hall, George Walton, Battle of Kettle Creek, and siege of Savannah.

  5. Essential Question • What persons/groups/events were significant to the American Revolution?

  10. Elijah Clarke • Elijah Clarke • Lead the first Georgia Victory • Battle of Kettle Creek • Georgia took much needed weapons from the British.

  11. Austin Dabney • Dabney was a freeborn Mulatto (child of mixed parents). • Met a man by the name of, Richard Aycock. • He saved Elijah Clarke’s life. • Dabney was given a plot of land • Fifty-five yeas after the Battle of Kettle Creek, he died.

  12. Nancy Hart • Female Patriot • Held British Soldiers at gunpoint until help arrived.

  13. Button Gwinnett • The Declaration of Independence was officially signed on August 2, 1776 • 1765, Went to live in Savannah as a merchant, but he failed. • Served in Colonial Georgia’s legislature. • Member 2nd Continental Congress • Autograph worth over $250,000!!!!!

  14. Lyman Hall • As an official representative of Georgia, Hall signed the Declaration. • 1747, Graduated Yale • Was a minister, but abandoned it to become a doctor.

  15. George Walton • Signer of The Declaration of Independence • In 1769 he moved to Savannah, where he pursued a legal career. • One of the most successful lawyers in Georgia. Walton County is named for him.

  16. Siege of Savannah • Savannah citizens played prominent roles in the cause of American independence. • The attack only lasted 45 minutes, failed. • One of the best foreign patriots, Polish Count Casimir Pulaski, was dead.
