  2. Plagiarism – What Is It? Any time you use another person’s words, ideas, or research in your writing or presentations and do not give credit to the original source, you are guilty of plagiarism.

Forms of Plagiarism • Intentional Idea Theft (Very Serious) – Knowingly submitting someone else’s work as your own (i.e. lifting a paper of the internet, paying someone to write your essay, “borrowing” a friends previously written work, etc…) • Failure to put quotation marks around direct quotations (Serious) • Failure to cite summarized or paraphrased information (Serious) • Paraphrasing too closely (somewhat serious)

  5. Penalties for Plagiarism • Fail the assignment • Fail the course • Loss of your teacher’s respect (that teacher will probably not be a good reference for you when you seek employment or entrance to graduate school) • Academic Suspension • Expulsion from school

  6. How to Avoid Plagiarism • Work on your assignments well before they are due • Break large assignments into stages with unofficial due dates • Have a note-taking system • Practice paraphrasing and summarizing information • Work with a writing tutor
