Academic Honesty From the University Catalog: “The maintenance of academic integrity and quality education is the responsibility of each student within this University and The CSU system. Cheating and plagiarism in connection with an academic program at a campus is listed in Section 41301, Title 5, California Code of Regulations, as an offense for which a student may be expelled, suspended, put on probation, or given a less severe disciplinary sanction.”

“Plagiarism is using others’ ideas and words without clearly acknowledging the source of that information” (Writing Tutorial Services, 2000). Even if the failure to give credit is NOT intentional -- any lack of credit, even accidental, is considered plagiarism.

Deciding if Something is "Common Knowledge" • Material is probably common knowledge if . . . • You find the same information undocumented in at least five other sources • You think it is information that your readers will already know • You think a person could easily find the information with general reference sources
What’s missing? It has been found that drug and alcohol education programs such as DARE, that are used to scare students are not always effective. This program is used all over and it has been found that in actuality, the program has not reduced drug use or has not given positive drug attitudes. However, programs that do seem to be effective are programs like Life Skills Training. This program is aimed at providing students with combat skills in dealing with their peers and peer pressure. This program alone has been found to have lowered the use of alcohol and tobacco by more than 50 percent.
